This version of our product led to the creation of our most popular feature - ‘Meeting Mode’. Within 6 months of launching the app, we reached #1 ranking on Zoom's marketplace and multiplied our total user base by 5x.

Business challenge

Market context & Impact:
COVID-19 tested our collaboration, teamwork, and execution processes, forcing us to re-evaluate how we work. At Charma (FKA WorkPatterns), we reimagined people management by addressing the growing gaps created by the surge in remote and distributed work. As part of the first cohort selected to launch Zoom Apps in 2021, we created an in-meeting app that transformed remote meetings and empowered managers to lead their teams more effectively.

User pain points:

The number of people primarily working from home tripled between 2019 and 2021 (Census). While we navigated these changes, there were a series of problems our users were facing with the change in working style such as:

  • Foundational issues in collaboration and communication

  • A general feeling of lack of support and career growth by individual contributors

  • A lack of trust

  • Time management issues

  • Isolation, etc.

Our research revealed that the pandemic amplified a main pre-existing issue—managers struggling to lead effective one-on-ones. The shift to remote work dramatically intensified this challenge.

Strategic approach

Our research revealed that the pandemic amplified a main pre-existing issue—managers struggling to lead effective one-on-ones. The shift to remote work dramatically intensified this challenge.

Due to the quick turnaround required for this feature we worked closely with the Zoom's Apps partnership and engineering team. Managing stakeholders on both sides while staying true to our value proposition and customers led us to disrupt our traditional approaches and adapt to present needs.

Our goal was to re-imagine our current product in a zoom-first environment. Adapt, iterate, release.

Measurable results

‘Meeting mode’ allows our users to conduct their meetings in a new remote-first environment with little to no disruption to the traditional meeting formats their used to. Sketches/Initial Concept Car

Based on the initial designs created by Zoom for the App structure, we ideated ways in which we’d streamline our App to fit the Zoom use case as well as fit the Zoom apps canvas.

Challenge: Re-evaluating our design system to cater to a new device and still maintain the trust, the order and the familiarity our users new and loved.

Final iteration

Meeting Mode

Meeting mode is a feature created for our Zoom App that allows users to be in a focused state as they navigate through their meeting agenda items during their 1:1 meeting. It converts your collaborative workspace into a guided in-meeting experience by:

  • Letting users go through their agenda one topic at a time

  • Record notes and decisions made as action items with owners and deadlines

  • Send out a meeting summary to all participants of that meeting, including the ones that missed it
